The topic of this quarter’s bilingual political discussion night is the threat of metallic mining in El Salvador. Two U.S.-based mining companies have already filed lawsuits against the Salvadoran government through “investor rights” provisions in the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). The results of these lawsuits will be an important precedent as popular movements around the world stand up to exploitative mining projects and the trade agreements that facilitate them.
