The U.S. free trade agreement with Central America (CAFTA) has allowed gold mining companies to sue El Salvador for hundreds of millions of dollars, arguing that the Salvadoran government should not be allowed to protect its environment and people by denying mining permits. Now, the U.S. wants to enact similar agreements with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama – and our Senators and Representatives are supporting these terrible deals! Hey everyone! After a really busy week and a half of transition, the dust is settling and we are proud to announce the events of the 2010 Anti-Mining Speaking Tour to the public!

¡Hola compañer@s! Después de una semana y media de transición, el polvo se está asentando y ¡tenemos orgullo de anunciar al público los eventos de la gira de 2010 contra la minería!

Our speaker, Orlando Velasco, is an anti-mining leader from San Isidro, El Salvador. He is going to be giving first-hand reports on the resistance to toxic mining in El Salvador, the lawsuits filed against the Salvadoran government by North American mining companies, and the links between U.S. free trade policy and metallic mining in Central America.

Nuestro orador, Orlando Velasco, es un líder en la lucha anti-minera de San Isidro, El Salvador. Nos va a presentar un reportaje de primera mano sobre la resistencia a la minería en El Salvador, las demandas en contra del gobierno salvadoreño por parte de compañías mineras norteamericanas, y los vínculos entre la política de libre comercio de los Estados Unidos y la minería metálica en Centroamérica.

Grassroots organizing in El Salvador has stopped North American gold mining companies in their tracks. But now one company, Pacific Rim Mining (based in Vancouver, B.C.) is taking advantage of U.S. trade policy to sue the Salvadoran government for hundreds of millions of dollars, arguing that El Salvador should not be able to protect its environment and people by denying mining permits.

May 27: International Day of Action against mining and free trade in El Salvador

Join Seattle CISPES on May 27th at 4:00 p.m. to protest Canadian mining company Pacific Rim’s lawsuit against El Salvador… and to call on Congress to reform our trade policy, which has allowed this lawsuit to exist in the first place.Únanse con Seattle CISPES el 27 de Mayo a las 4:00 p.m. para protestar la demanda legal presentada por la compañía minera canadiense Pacific Rim en contra del estado Salvadoreño. Y también para exigir que el Congreso Estadounidense reforme las políticas del libre comercio, las cuales permiten este tipo de demanda en el primer lugar.
